Updated Password Requirements for Active Directory / Email Users

Effective August 12, 2016 new AFGE email and logon passwords will require a minimum of eight characters and three of the four categories of characters:

  • Uppercase letter
  • Lowercase letters
  • Number
  • Special character (for example, !, $, #, %)

Do I need to immediately change my password?

No!  No specific or immediate action is required. The new password criteria will be enforced during your next password expiration change.

I want to change my password now.  How do I change my password?

To change your password from anywhere, follow these instructions to Change Your Password Using MyAFGE.

Why the change?

Computers are excellent at guessing passwords - especially those in the dictionary or that are frequently used.  While most systems support two-factor authentication, protection of every single system is not yet possible.  Selecting a good password, with a reasonable length, and an appropriate use of complexity is a small, but important step in protecting the Federation.
